I got a new smoker for my birthday, Masterbuilt 710 wifi.
I've never used an electric smoker, do you soak the chips, some guys ive talked to say yes and some say never, so i thought I'd ask the pros! I had one gut tell me he uses pellets in the tray.
Sorry for the redundant post.

Picked up a couple MES130B's and have been playing around the last few weeks. I don't soak my chips because when I put chips in I want them to start doing their job.

I didn't soak mine when I used my electric. I also found that a smoke tube with pellets was great for longer smokes. For shorter I didn't mind loading chips every half hour or hour. It's personal preference but I used both.
EDIT:
@java don't be sorry for asking. That's why we are all here. Get it questions answered and get new ideas.

Most here have said no soak and they've said that for a very long time

When I used mine I took the chip tray out and either used a pellet tube or tray. But no you don't soak the chips

Don't do that . You'll create a bomb .
Use chips to get started , Like said all ready don't soak .
Do not use pellets . The combustion rate is not the same as wood chips . To many pellets will smolder , making a " rich " enviroment . When it leans out it will combust all at once .
Enjoy ,, and follow the Masterbuilt directions .

edit : just to clarify , pellets in a tube or smoke tray is the way to go . No pellets in the factory tray where you put the wood chips .

Congrats on the new rig. Pellets and tube, no other way for me.

Don't soak.

Learn your new smoker as is out of the box and after a time you'll notice what more experienced folks see as limitations and that will be the time to start thinking about modifications but for now just go with as is.

The manual does actually contain useful information.

My MES manual says:

• You may use dry or pre-soaked wood chips in your smoker. Dry chips will burn faster and produce more intense smoke. Chips pre-soaked in water (for approximately 30 minutes) will burn slower and produce a less intense smoke.

So its your call. I've done it both ways and have stopped soaking my chips. I think it's a waste of time but its a personal conclusion, your mileage may vary...

I admit, I tend to skip past the long lists of warnings because they often have stuff for the real idiots out there who may not know you arent supposed to smoke your children or pets and not to start an open fire in the electric smoker, but within the warnings in my MES manual there's this:

• Do not use wood pellets.

But it also has stuff like:

• Do not use smoker on wooden or flammable surfaces.
• Do not leave smoker unattended.

Ha! I've used my MES on my deck for years and I AM NOT babysitting it...so...there's that...

I like these too:

• Before each use check all nuts, screws and bolts to make sure they are tight and secure.
• Use of alcohol, prescription or non-prescription drugs may impair user’s ability to properly assemble or safely operate smoker.

Alllllrighty then! Yea, nobody is drinking beer or anything, and sure, I go over my smoker like it''s an aircraft about to take flight before using it every time🫨

And more...
• Accessory attachments not supplied by Masterbuilt Manufacturing, LLC are NOT recommended and may cause injury.

So much for that mailbox mod and tube smoke generators...

Thanks for the advice everybody! Like I said I've been out of the "game " for a while.
Made a big move to Alaska, and finally getting back into it.

I have always wanted to visit Alaska

Its not for everyone, but we are pretty happy here.

Like I said visit. Lol. Right now Pa feels like Alaska. We are in a 3 week period of single digits. This week it will warm up to the 30's finally

Wish we had moved there about 40 years ago way too old with health problems now
