I just ordered The Maverick OT3BBQ thermometer from Amazon @ $20.99 including shipping and I am still waiting for it to be delivered.  This is not a meat thermometer and it is to read Ambient cooking temperatures only.  It has a short probe with a little metal stand it slides into to stand anywhere in the smoker.  The cable/probe is rated up to 700 degrees F and it is not wireless.  Amazon reviews average 4+ stars out of 5.  Does anyone own one that can comment on Pros & Cons?  I ordered it through the address below from One Country Shop Inc. under the more choices on the right.

Just ordered one myself...I'm using a brick & block pit that I built, and it's been nearly impossible to get a decent grill temp using a regular meat thermometer once I've put the cover on..I'm hoping this will solve that problem

Steve,

I used the Maverick OT3BBQ thermometer in the oven over Easter weekend with a dial thermometer and both were identical @ 400 degrees.  When the thermometer is in alert mode it displays the average temp. and beeps when +/- 15 degrees.  When the alert is turned off it reads actual temp. which is less noisy.  I just wanted an accurate probe/cable smoker thermometer and want actual temp. not an average.  I know it reads correctly just need to see how long the probe/cable lasts.  No complaints.  I want to let it hang right at the meat level through the top vent on my kamado Kooker since it's in the center of the smoker.  I can always run it under the hood where the seal won't pinch it.  I'm trying to keep/store cable as straight as possible because extreme angles can cause the cable to fail faster. The stand it clips to mounts easily to oven/smoker grates.

Thanks for the update Kurt!

I think hanging the probe at meat level was a good move,....up until now I've been using a small inexpensive meat thermometer, which I stuck through a small hole in the cover, which resulted in my getting the temp about 8-10 inches from the grill..I'm guessing I was a good 20-40 degrees off...

I'm Going to smoke a Jarlsberg Swiss, onion, green pepper, and mushroom fatty on the Kamado Kooker this afternoon.  I'll post a Q-view.  I was playing around with the Kamado yesterday afternoon on keeping the temp @ 225*.  I had The Maverick OT3BBQ, deep fry, oven & electric probe thermometers on/in it and all were identical which surprised me.  Instead of dangling the Maverick down the top vent I'll use the clip it comes with to clip to the grate under the lid which is a lot easier.  I hope you have the same luck I've been experiencing.
