I'm from Iowa. My family and I enjoy grilling and using a propane smoker. This year I'm shopping for a new electric smoker. Budget is under $500. Any members have any suggestions or ideas?

Hello and welcome from East Texas. This is a great site, lots of information and great people that are willing to throw in their two cents worth on about anything.

Welcome to the group!  Glad you've joined us.  There are several companies who make good electric smokers for under $500.  If you can find a first generation model, you might check out a Masterbuilt Electric Smokehouse (MES).  I cooked on an MES40 for a long time, and really liked it.  From what I hear, you should avoid the 2nd gen MES...there have been several quality control issues with that model.

There are also units sold be Smokin-It and Smokin Tex for less the $500 that look like good rigs.  If you posed your question in the Electric Smoker Forum, you'd likely get some feedback from members who own those rigs:

Good luck and Happy smoking!

I second Red's suggestion on the Smokin It units. Built like tanks and lots of members here like them a lot.
