Hi all,
A few days ago I bought a case of MREs. More out of what I've heard about them. And curious on how Uncle Sam has been feeding the troops lately. And if they are better than the C-rats I had in the 80's.
I had the beef strips in BBQ sauce yesterday. And put my thoughts about it in a different thread.
Today, I had the meatballs in marinara sauce.

This kit included:
The main entree
Italian bread sticks
Jalapeno cheddar cheese spread
Cherry and blueberry cobbler
Teriyaki beef stick
Orange powdered drink mix
Chocolate chip cookie

This was pretty good actually. Way better then the c-rats!
Ann snatched the cobler. She said it looked nothing like cobler. I agreed on that! But she said it tasted good.
The snack stick was good. Bulls teriyaki beef stick. Never heard of them before.
The cookie was very good. A little dry though.
The orange drink kind of reminded me of Tang.
The meatballs took 10 minutes to heat up in the water activated pouch.
Be warned though. That pouch gets hot!

So far. I haven't been disappointed with them. I'll try another tomorrow.

Awesome review Steve. I didn’t serve due to a few reasons… but to you and those who did… a big Thank You and tip of the cap to you and all who done service.

We buy these at the local Army Surplus store. They are great when hunting elk mostly and temps are usually pretty chilly!

Nice warm up when lunch time comes around. My son and his friend who’s Dad did serve as MP, really enjoy these.

So cool with our tech now how it can cook in the package.

And again, to all who served… past and present… Thank You and God Bless! You are appreciated!

When I went in '86 we were getting MREs.

Some were ok and some like freeze dried beef/pork patty were disgusting. There was always a few bottles of hot sauce in the trailer on the heavy weapons range!

This reminds me, I need to go through and taste test what I have. I try to remember to sample one pack from the cases I have every couple of years and make notes on what is still good. They really do keep for a long time in a climate controlled environment. The candy seems to go quickest, oddly enough.

Only problem is I'm trying to cut back on carbs and calories for a while! Need to drop 10lbs and those MRE's are designed with maximum calories, carbs and on the good side, protien.

A lot of the stuff in them can be very tasty. And yes, I cant imagine anything they label as "cobbler" is anything like actual cobbler. It is more likely just a dense cake.

Where did you get yours? It's probably about time I get another case. I keep them and some freeze dried stuff on hand in case of "societal collapse":emoji_anguished:

SH,My time in the service was mostly the C-rat era, MRE's were just coming around when I got out. I don't remember any heaty thingy back then and the food tasted better than a C-rat but I was usually still hungry after eating them. Yours look much better than the first ones the Army issued !

They were just starting to use them when I got out. And some were pretty nasty alright!!

I got mine from MREs world. The cobler was like a thick pudding with fruit and cobler bits. It must have been good. Ann didn't offer to share any!

Yup, same here. When they first came out. I heated them in hot water. They didn't have the water activated bags then. Funny thing about them. There is a warning on them. That if 10 or more MREs heat pouches were being used at the same time in an enclosed vehicle. Then a window should be opened. These heaters produce hydrogen gas.
