Method to Season a new RF Smoker

I am getting close to being done with my 500 gallon RF trailer build and hoping to run a test fire in the next day or so and then season the inside. What method have you used or would you recommend on a pit this size? This was used as a waste motor oil storage tank in its previous life. After cutting out the firebox opening I had done a couple hot burns to clean out the tank as well as had it sand blasted inside before starting to work on the tank.

Congratulations! Time to tack a few practice laps before the company cook. You have done everything necessary to fully prep the tank for seasoning so it’s history as an oil tank is no longer an issue. Regarding seasoning....I found the most effective way is to procure a couple large spray cans (commercial kitchen type) of canola oil and use them to lightly coat the interior of the cc. Then build a robust fire and bring the cc temp up about as hot as it will go, then let the fire burn down and the cc to cool back to ambient temp. It will be hard not to peek, but this process works best if you use a light coat of oil and keep the cc doors closed for the entire process. Most of the time I can get a sufficient seasoning down with one coat, but occasionally I will find couple spots that got missed and will apply another coat.

Are you going to put counter weights on the doors?

I am going to be starting a 250 gal propane tank build here in the next few weeks. Just need to get time to get the crew together.

I am going to roll without counter weights as of now. If they get to be too much I will add later.

Also, where did you get those hinges? What type are those? I was going to use the pipe and re-bar hinges but those look much nicer.

Thanks, I had a local machine/fab shop burn them out on a cnc plasma.
