I am in the process of preseasoning my new MES40 and after about an hour I check up on it and notice that I can see into the smoker from the top where the door meets the box. The portion where I can see is about 2 or 3 millimeters but I can see the grate inside. Do I need to adjust the door tension and how fast should my smoker reach 275 degrees?

I would adjust the latch if there is a gap. Your smoker should get up to temp pretty quickly since it will be empty, and has a 1200 watt element in it, but it also depends on the outside temp.

I tightened the latch on the side almost all the way and there is still a partial gap. It is at 275 but I'm afraid this could stress the unit eventually. The gasket looks wavy as if its been crimped in the wrong position for its production and shipping process. Possibly a defective unit?

Thanks for the help Glock. I called CS and I was told that the doors on "all of the smokers" were made to not fully seal and provide ventilation. Can someone else confirm this or am I being told incorrect info just so I don't file a complaint? Again, thanks for all the help on here.

That is incorrect, on the Electric units at least. My 2011 MES 40's door is sealed tight...Why place a Gasket Seal on the door if it is Supposed to Vent out the Door. Masterbuilt CS is usually outstanding, you may have just gotten a Newbie or someone having a bad day. Try again and if not getting a realistic answer ask for the Supervisor. In the past members with a similar problem have received New Doors and or Hinges...JJ

I called again and without any questions the guy said they would send a new door. I am pleased that he offered this but still upset to the lazy lady who blatantly lied to me earlier, that is unacceptable. So I am about to return the smoker in exchange for a new one. I will check at the store this time and then hopefully I will be preseasoning this evening.

Glad you got that taken care of as you shouldn't see any gap in a sealed door.

The MS 40" is a great unit, I've had mine for about 2 months now and love it.
