Just picked up an A-MAZE-N pellet smoker 5"x8". I have an MES 30. I don't want to take up space one of my racks and was wondering if anyone has tried what I am thinking about.

Since I will no longer need to wood chip tray. I was thinking of removing the tray, the rack that holds it, and the metal piece that sits under the heating element. If I removed all of these, I can fit the tray on the bottom of the unit adjacent to the heating element and still maintain four open racks.

Has anyone tried this? Any reason it wouldn't work (e.g. heating element needs something under it to heat correctly)?

I have the 40" and set it in the lower left corner on the bottom. Bearcarver Bearcarver should be by at some point. He is the resident MES expert.

That's what I am trying to do but it won't sit flat on the bottom left of the 30" so assuming the 40" is wider???

Yeah the 40 is the wider model. I wouldn't see a problem with what you are trying to do. If I am understanding correctly you might want to put something there to protect the element while you are smoking.

I have a mes 30 and with mine it does fit on the two bars on bottom left but it would never stay lit in mine so I went to the mailbox mod as for taking those pieces out I really don't know so I won't be any help there, but this is a picture of where it fits in mine, probably an older model then yours though.

I don't have the tray , but I think that 5 x 8 was designed to fit on the bars of the Gen 1 30 . Later model mes 30's don't have the same room on the left .
Bearcarver Bearcarver knows for sure .

Exactly! Guess I will experiment...
Sorry , I read your post , but I guess it didn't register until I re read it .
I have the guts removed on mine , but left the lower bars intact . I burn wood chunks in mine for hotter cooks . Works good . Use the tube for lower temps . I keep mine elevated .
