Does anyone see a problem with putting a lit briquet in the chip tray to assure the wood chips smoke?  I suspect I could also add a briquet through the side loader too, with chips, everytime I load chips.  Happy to have someone point out the flaw in my plan.

ive had no issues with my MES 40 not producing smoke.  ive had a few people tell me that items were over smoked.

I haven't had any thing over smoked but i have wanted to try using a briq or two for the flavor.seems like there was a thread on that recently.try it out and let us know how it worked

yeah, you can put a briquette in the chip tray.  It will leave a smoke ring on the meat but it won't really change the flavor.  My MES smoked fine so it didn't really change how much smoke came from the chips.  I used to start with 3 briquettes in the chip tray then add one every 1.5 hours to get a smoke ring.
