I am trying to do the burn off on my MBGS 800 and it is taking a long time to get to 250 F. It is cold and windy out today, around 28 F. It has been lit for 30 minutes and is only at 120 F. I am using Kingsford briquets, as not to waste my lump on the burn off. I was just wondering if it is normal or if I am doing something wrong?

Ok so a little update. Apparently, the hopper caught fire and the digital thermometer was not reading the temp correctly. The dial thermometer was reading sear and there was an error code on the digital one. I think it was Error 4.

Ok so after a bunch of research, the MBGS 800 has an issue where it is not reading the temp correctly. It’s either an issue with the temp probe or the board. I have a trouble ticket in with Masterbuilt.

Thanks for the info. I have the 1050 and haven't heard of any isuues with the 800.
But MB support has been great when I needed them !

you talkin about the separate probes? No u can't go above like 300 with em or they will burn up. Same goes for aftermarket probes like inkbird they have a temp tolerance You said burn off so I assume this is the 1st time u used it? Did u pull the slides? lol just askin for a friend. I see you did mods to? Did you break something?

The internal temperature probe that is attached to the lid. Yeah the slides got pulled. It seems like maybe the board or probe is bad. Nope didn’t break anything. Just got a lemon, I guess. I’m good as long as Masterbuilt makes things right. Worst case, I send it back to Amazon and sell the mods to someone else.

The probe attached to the lid isn't wired into the unit only the one inside and to the left low on the grate. You didn't say if it was the first-time u fired up the unit. Sometimes the ash needs to be beaten into submission above where the starter goes to shake out loose stuff. Here's the reddit for the error code not sure if u been thru that yet.

Also did u build it or was it pre built could one of the lid or fire doors switches be swapped with the wrong one? just trying to brainstorm..

make sure u contact them thru facebook messenger they are very responsive when contacted like that

Hopper caught fire??? Wow, good thing you didn't leave it unattended.

Sorry to see that you're having issues already, but then perhaps better now than later when it's out of warranty or past the time when you can return it via Amazon.

Good luck getting it all sorted out.

What is meant by the hopper caught fire ?
You will see fire if you open the hopper lid.
Try these solutions and let us know the outcome.

I had the same error code a couple times when I first got my 560. I did a hard reset of the system and it has worked perfectly ever since. The other posters are correct about the meat probes though...the probes are designed for internal meat temps, not oven temps. do not leave them just laying in the smoker or the unit will throw an error and shut down.

Keep us posted how things work out with Masterbuilt. This is one I haven't heard before with this series.
Masterbuilt was being great to deal with at first. They are supposed to send me a new controller, temp probe, and a bag of lump for my trouble. I got that response last week. On Monday, I emailed them to get a status update and they sent me a FedEx tracking number. I checked the tracking number yesterday and it hasn’t even shipped yet. So I emailed support and they advised me that there was nothing that they can do once a tracking number has been created. I am honestly about to return the damn thing to Amazon, at this point, and just buy a WSM or something similar. It has been going on two weeks and I haven’t been able to smoke anything. I’m just getting tired of dealing with this thing.

How did you do the hard reset? That is not something that I have tried yet, as far as I know. I have powered off the unit and unplugged it from the wall. Their support never mentioned anything about a hard reset even being possible.

In MB defense, I work in logistics, lately FedEx has usually been 2-3 days late picking things up. LTL (less than a truckload) freight has been a nightmare for at least the last 6 months. Possibly MB has the shipment set up and FedEx hasn’t gotten it.

You do make a good point and that was not something I even thought about with my frustration of not being able to use my smoker.

Reading what you're going through with the frustration, the WSM, which was the recommendation of some in here earlier, might be a better option at this point.

It is arguably at the very least, deserving of another look and further consideration in light of the developments and your desires to start smoking food with a good charcoal burner.

As mentioned, the WSM is not mechanical or electronic and so problems such as this problem that you are having with the MB are non existent with the WSM.

Finally, while it is understandable that MB may be having shipping problems, it may be hard to justify letting their shipping problem become your problems.

Who knows when you will get what they are sending? MB themselves don't even know. They cannot even tell you.

Sending it back to Amazon and ordering the WSM, may be worth looking into at this point, but whatever you decide, good luck and hopefully you can get to using a new smoker sooner rather than later.

Ok so I finally pulled the trigger and after much debate, I ended up going with the Masterbuilt 800. Thank you all for your responses! If you guys have any tips on the 800 it would be much appreciated.

Posted back on 2/15/22. Hopefully it doesn't take a month between the time you made the announcement of your order and the first time you're able to use your new smoker.

I got my replacement parts today and a free bag of lump from Masterbuilt. So, almost a month from ordering it, to getting it to work. It ended up that the internal temperature probe was bad. Doing my seasoning burn right now. So hopefully on Sunday, I will have a few pictures of some beautiful St. Louis ribs to show you guys.
