We have apple, cherry and pecan around where I live but no maple in the stores. Is there a particular type of maple that is used. My my mom has a maple tree, it's what we call a soft maple because is breaks so easy.It also grows like crazy and you can cut them back to almost nothing..........Does this type of maple make for good smoking?

I think its the sugar maple that is used for smoking. However if I find out you can use any maple I am set as maples here are cut all the time they just are not the sugar maple.
