Maintenance of a charcoal unit

Ok, it is a charcoal grill which by putting fire on one side and meat on the other is used as a smoker.....My question is that the paint is coming off of the unit especially on the inside.  Can I use Tremclad/Rustoleum type paint to cover the metal or is it a hazard to the food.  If not Tremclad/Rustoleum (or competitive product), is there a product that is safe?

Are you sure it is paint on the inside?  Could it be seasoning flaking off?  I can't imagine a grill being painted on the inside, and I would certainly never paint the inside.  It is hard enough keeping paint on certain parts of the exterior with some units. 

  And this doesn't even address the safety issues with paint on the inside.

As to paint, some use hi temp rustoleum for the exterior.  I have read that others prefer an even higher temp exhaust manifold paint.

I have the exact same grill and only touch up the outside.  I also wire brush the inside.  NEVER paint the inside, just spray it with olive oil, Pam, whatever to keep it from rusting.
