Started a chimney of lump coal this moring and in the past have had trouble with sparks comming out of the chimney. I found an aluminum strainer at goodwill that I thought would work well it fit perfect over the chimney .So I started the coal all was going well until the lump coal took off and slowy I saw my strainer melt into the lump coal boy is that a hot fire.

not only lump, but brickquetts will also............

my ecb gourmet need a few mods......and one of em was using a pizza pan.......the one with tons of 3/8th's holes all over it........to use to hold the charchol up off the bottom of the pan......to get better air flow......
and it melted it in parts...........just using brickquettes..........

i also agree with the statement on the sparks from lump.........BIG TIME

i bought a bag from our local Hy-Vee store.......lump............put it in the chimney, not only sparks.......but CHUNKS was popping out.....like it was popcorn............VERY DANGEROUS........these chunks were flying several yards...........if kids would of been around.........i shudder just to think of it...........i took the bag back to hyvee and got my money back.........the manager immediatley pulled the product from the shelves.........HE took it home to check out our claims.......needless to say........he told the sales rep bout it, and won't carry that brand.........sorry i can't remember what brand it is............but this is one reason i don't care to use lump
