Just got a couple of bags of Lumberjack pellets. In my bag of hickory, I had clumps of pellets and sawdust. This is my first time trying the Lumberjack brand. I've never seen this with any other brand (BBQ's Delight, Traeger, Weber) and I'm wondering if the Lumberjack brand is really as good as folks say or did I get a questionable bag?

Hi there and welcome!
I'm curious if some water or moisture got into the bag somehow. Never seen this or heard of it in any brand. Well I have heard of dust but not clumps and rarely heard of any issues with Lumberjack.

Are you running a pellet smoker? If you are running an A-Maze-N Pellet Smoker (AMNPS) tube or tray then you can burn that dust with no issue and you can still use the clumps by getting them wet and the clumps will swell up and mush apart easy. Then you spread it out and let it dry to have dust again for burning. This is an easy method to make dust from pellets.

Only pellets I'll use. Usually have some dust at the end of a bag but would expect that with any brand. If it's excessive I'd believe it's just a bad bag.

Currently, using the pellets in my Green Mountain, although, I do use the AMNPS in my Masterbuilt and the clumps should be no problem for that. I've heard/read a lot of folks use Lumberjack and maybe the bag I got had gotten had some moisture in it. Thanks for the quick reply!

I know I've been through approx 40 or 50 bags of LJ pellets and I haven't had any issues like this. Man I hate to hear that. If it's bad enough, might try taking it back and exchange it for another bag?

With all due respect michaelj michaelj , do you have any pictures to share? Maybe some of us can narrow down what happened. I prefer Lumberjack myself but it's not all I use. As with most of these people I've never had an issue.

I'll have to check. I was dividing the (hickory) 20lb bag into 1 gallon ziplock bags when I came across these clumps. They broke apart easily, a couple of the clumps were the size of a golfball. Sorry, I didn't take any pictures. There was definitely more dust in the bag. My wife got the bag in Seattle, can't find LJ brand in Spokane. I will pay more attention when buying bags in the future.

Same LJ is all I have used in a number of years. I bought some online before and those were dustier I figure mostly due to shipping BS. Found them locally and they seem better. If you go to their website they have a dealer locator. I would buy local if possible.

i only use lumberjack pellets and recommend them to anyone who uses pellets. if you have lots of clumps and dust, then moisture definately got in there somehow. there will be a bit of dust at the end of the bag but thats normal for any bagged pellets.

Another Lumberjack fanboy here. Other than a couple months where they weren't available locally, I've pretty much used them exclusively since 2019.

I think my current batch brings me to about 2200-2400 lbs so far. I've never found a clump or had any issues other than the usual dust bomb at the bottom of the bag. I pay about $0.50/lb so if I have to toss out $0.25 worth of pellets and dust I'll do it.

Me thinks you got a fluke.

Agree with all the others, never had a problem with LJ pellets. Tried other brands, but IMHO, LJ is the best pellet out there.

Another LJ fan here too.Unfortunately they're not in any stores around here so I have to have them shipped so I'll wait until there's a good online sale and stock up but I'm only filling tubes so it's a once every couple of years kinda thing.

I'm also 100% LJ pellets. I get a bunch shipped in a few times a year.

Got to believe that bag was an outlier. Never had this issue with LJ. Just check the next bag you buy for any punctures.

It seems from the description that they got wet. Did the bag look roughed up? Chalk it up to poor handling, I try to avoid bags of pellets and charcoal that look banged around. Wouldn’ t write this up as a LJ problem.
