Saturday morning at 4 am I left the house hoping to return with photos of a VERY large shark. Unfortunately we ran into trouble when it came to catching bait. The big bait fish that should have been there were not wanting to be cut open impaled on a hook and dangled in front of sharks. I really do not understand why? I did manage some nice trout but they are dinner and not bait.

We ended up on a nice sand bar where we could answer the call of nature and attempt to catch some bait. I pulled out my flyrod and with a small fly started catching some big pinfish. (Think aggressive crappie)

After catching around 10 of them we went back out to a deep dropoff and put out some baits with others added to the water in a chumbag.

Not too long later I had a nice hit and run so I reeled in my bait to see if it was still there. Most of it was aside from a large round bite taken out of it. Figuring the shark would still be there I threw my bait back in the general area I had it before. Afew tugs had me ready. The float holding the chumbag jump big time. Then my line started pulling out, then started going faster. Thinking I had given it time enough to eat I closed the bail on my reel and went tight.

This shark went BALLISTIC!!!! 4 big jumps and splashes later it had wrapped me around the chumbag. I pulled anchor and let the shark pull me to the chumbag float. Getting there I was able to untangle my line from the floats line and the fight began again. Feeling the shark was too close to me I loosened the drag on the reel and let it run a safer distance from me before tightening it. At this point it came flying out of the water for some more big jumps.

I wish I had a picture of the shark out of the water but that is a hard shot to capture. My buddy Mark (Cooknfish) did good to get what he did.

The fight continued with me easily getting the better of the shark. My tackle was set up to battle fish around 200 lbs. This shark was more in the 40 lb range. It still put a good bend in the rod and made for a fun fight.

I was able to get the small shark close to me (small = less then 4') and saw it was wrapped up in my 80lb leader. I started trying to untangle the shark (without getting my hands anywhere near the shark) but there were a few wraps of the leader going through its mouth. Between me holding pressure on the shark and its chewing it did manage to bite through my leader and swim away before a picture. Regardless of losing the photo op I must say the exciting fight had me excited and my hands shaking!!!

What fun! Now some people have mentioned my sanity of fighting a shark with my feet in the water. All I can say is it was hot that day and having the feet in the water also heightens the feel of danger. Fun stuff!

Other fun points of the day included having some BIG dark shadow pass between me and my kayak. It may have been a manatee although it never surfaced or it may have been a BIG bull shark which could have easily killed me. Yeah I hope it was a manatee.
Also I think the heat may have gotten to my friend. He started wearing the chumbag?

Great day on the water

. Makes me miss my tuna days more and more. I loved the sport fishing, really gets the heart pumping when you land a monster fish.
It don't get any better than that

That is pretty crazy, I would be afraid Id flip boat over. thanks for sharing the story, and photos.

that first picture with the bridge reminds me of the Jim Carey movie "Trueman" when he was out on the water, so calm.

Definitely was a great day on the water! You would be surprised at the stability of kayaks. They are great fishing platforms.
I really love the photo of me with the skyway bridge in the background.Seems like it should be a tourist photo inviting fishermen to this area to fish.

Excellent story and pics. Glad you had a great mornin. I agree with ya about the bridge pic. Nice shot for sure!

Now I am wondering... Has anyone smoked shark before? This one was a good size for doing so.

Nice bump here as I missed it.

Vlap - Wow is all can say.. Sitting on a kayak letting a shark pull you around. Also, standing in the water during this, too.

Shark's are a blast to catch. Was it a bonnethead that are so prevalent in our bay? I am assuming that chum bag hasn't been used yet or you're not using oily chum, cause that stink doesn't ever come off anything ever. I need to start getting back out on the yak again.

It was a nice blacktip. We were hoping to get a picture of the shark with the bridge in the background. Before I could get ahold of it it managed to chew through the leader.

We did see a nice big bonnethead while wading but it left before I could put a bait in front of it.

Nice report. Fishing is my main hobby as well. We have some kayak fishers in our club out here as well. One of em had his kayak chomped by a great white last year, but escaped unharmed. I read about some guys going for salmon sharks in kayaks up in Alaska last year.

My latest good catch:

Vlap - awesome pics of your day o' fishing. I enjoyed reading the story as well as the pics. Never thought of fishing in a kayak. I'm on the east coast of FL and live 7 miles from the Ponce Inlet jetty / New Smyrna Beach waterway (which is known as the shark bite capital of the world) and would love to take a stab at that on a nice day.

BigWayne. I think I heard of that incident. Do you have any pictures of the kayak afterwards? No great Whites here but we have plenty of Bull sharks and hammerheads. (our main deadly species) May have had a full grown Bullshark swim between me and my kayak while I was wading that day as well. I just stood still and let it go on its way.

Sumo. I used to know that area well as a kid. I would go there every chance I got and go surfing. One day I had fish trying to hide right up against the bottom of my kayak. My buddy and I didn't know why until we saw a large dorsal fin cutting through the water between us. Not much we could do aside from hope the shark wasn't interested in us so we kept surfing. If you decide to get into kayak fishing take a look at this site. www.paddle-fishing.com and goto the forum there. Loads of good information on kayak fishing. Get very comfortable in a kayak and with safety procedures before attempting to go after big game such as sharks, tarpon or other large fish. Things can go wrong real fast and on the water that can cost you your life. My buddy I fish with has been fishing out of canoes and kayaks most of his life. I have been in a kayak 5 years and just started going for the big fish last year. Not trying to discourage you just want to insist on safety. Any questions you have let me know.
