Long time smoker....short time pellet user

Joined Oct 24, 2013
My name is Stan and I'm located in Edmond, OK which is just north of Oklahoma City.

I've been smoking foods for over 40 years with everything from horizontals, verticals, wood, NG, propane and electric smokers.

I recently purchased a Traeger Texas Grill.  I purchased a Traeger because it was the most popular in my area and had a good reputation for quality customer service.  I do have a little bit of buyers remorse because I've seen some really nice pellet grills like Yoders, Rec tecs, Maks, Memphis, etc... that may be better than my new pellet grill...but I'm still happy with my Traeger Texas grill.

I don't really look at my Texas as a grill, primarily a very good smoker.  I'm fine with that as I have 2 grills to take care of any grilling I may need to do.

Look forward to hearing all of the cooking advice, recipes, pellet info, etc...

Hmmmm, I can feel the buyers remorse. Traegers 'used' to be made here in my neck of the PNW but now, sadly, all from China. I see them in Costco here for about 499 or so and easily pass them by after lifting the lid. I was keen on a Green Mountain but saw one here in a farm & feed outlet and felt for 700 bucks was just not worth it, build wise, although I hear their controller is top notch. Looking forward to some of your posts with pics and opinions...Willie

Welcome, Stan. That traeger will put out some great smoked chow. I bought mine (texas elite) slightly used for cheap, cheap several years ago and never had a problem. It had weak smoke flavor until I went to bbq delite pellets and an Amazn pellet tube. Not sure if I bought new that I'd get a traeger but it does a good job. Best of luck and happy smokin'.

Thanks for the welcome.

Didn't mean to imply that I'm unhappy with my traeger...I like it very much and I feel like it will do just about anything I need in regard to smoking. It just appears to me that traeger has been resting on its laurels while some competitors have jumped ahead of traeger in their digital temp control vs the or tech that traeger is still using...plus it seems like rec tec and possibly some others have incorporated some added features that remain options on traeger.

I'm really interested in the pellets...seems like there is a diversity of opinions on that subject. I would certainly like to drive down the price per pound but first and foremost is the flavor and it seems that a product that was actually 100% of the type of wood on the label would give you better results....but I could be wrong about that.

I haven't been dissatisfied with the amount of smoke I've gotten from traeger pellets...my briskest have had good smoke rings and other foods have had decent smoked flavor....but I will always look at other pellets if they are better.
