I don't use sauce on my 26 , and have separate grates for the 22 for grilling / saucing .
I normally build a fire banked to one side . Burn that side off then spin the grate .
I like my chicken sauced like you do . Makes a mess .

you guys clean the grates?
That's exactly what I thought lol.
I usually just hit the top with a brush while its still warm and burn off the rest when it gets too thick.

I got lucky years ago when a customer who was remodeling an old home gave me my pick of the old school metal cabinets from the kitchen. Came with a run of cabinets with an old cast iron enameled sink with integral drainboards on both sides. That replaced my utility sink in the garage and has a big high goose-neck faucet. All the big stuff gets washed out there and my grates never make it in the house.

I am the one who gets ticked off because my wife uses that sink for gardening stuff and never, I mean NEVER cleans the freaking thing. It's amazing...for her...she just walks away and miraculously it gets scrubbed with Comet or Ajax and sprayed with antibacterial solution so its food safe again...oh well, she does laundry, so I guess we're even?

Learned my lesson about doing them in the dishwasher, stopped up the float switch which was a easy clean, the limit switch was on the bottom of tub couldn't see it, had to pull lay on back then push switch in.

I lay the racks on a plastic bag and spray with Awsome, let sit, flip over spray the other side and let sit. Then use a scrubby with hot water and they come clean. Awsome is from the Dollar Store for a buck 25
