Just drug home an eighty gallon air tank. Planning on making a smoker out of it. Probably going to leave it full size. Will that be way too overkill for doing just a butt or rack of ribs? How much more wood? Wood isn't really a concern too much, I cut my own, mostly oak. Also, I hear people talk about too much smoke on other styles of smokers. Is that a factor with a wood fired smoker? I've never used an off set wood burner, but am quite experienced with my vertical charcoal. Would you go full eighty gallons? Go reverse flow? Just thoughts going through my head before I start planning too much. Thanks for any input.

KB,Nothing wrong w/ a big smoker if you have room and free wood . I'm assuming you have access to ox/acetylene torches or plasma cutter and some type of welder to fabricate what you want to build.Make sure you can get racks that will fit your build. Please post some pics of your build ! Have fun.

I've got a 110 MIG welder and an angle grinder. I do have access to a touch and possibly a plasma cutter. Now I still need to decide between off set and reverse flow. Researching on here helps, and confuses. Part of the fun I guess.

First you'll need to know the measurements of the tank.. not so much the gallons... look over Dave's tutorial and start putting some numbers together using his calculator.. here's the link to it... https://www.smokingmeatforums.com/ams/reverse-flow-smoker-how-to-calculate-build-tutorial.9870/

I built mine using his calculator and it works flawlessly ... If you want to look it over... my build thread (link) is in my signature below...
62½"x20". Sharp looking smoker you built! Wanted to do a reverse flow, but reading Aaron Franklins book, an offset sounds easier. I've never used either kind so will have to think awhile.

Does this calculator work if I go off set instead?
