I have the Cabela's 36" vertical propane smoker. If, by chance my propane would run out while smoking, would it hurt the outcome to take a half hour or so to run and exchange tanks? If so, I guess I'll have to spend the extra fifty bucks or so for a spare.

I don't think it will hurt, just have to bring temp back up to where you were at when you ran out. When it is in the budget, a back up propane tank would be best. What are you smoking?

Refill the tank before your next smoke, that way you will be sure you won't run out.

Hope this helps!

Take care, have fun, and do good!

The tank will last a lot longer then you think because it's not using that much. But I would definetly get a spare tank. I have 4 tanks, 2 for the grill and 2 for the smoker. It may only be 15 minutes to get it filled but what if they're closed, out of propane, flat tire, etc..and besides who really wants to go chase down propane, I'd rather pop open another beer and just swich tanks. aahhh there's nothing like the smell of smokin meat!!

No place here to refill. It's an exchange deal...an empty tank for a full one. I don't want to give up a tank that's not empty and pay for a full one.

OK - bummer! How many hours have you used the tank? I usually get between 25-30 hours on a 20 pounder with my GOSM.

Take care, have fun, and do good!

I felt the same way, and you never really know how much is left in the tank. Unless you just happen to have a scale next to you. That's why I forked out the bucks for spare tanks. Yep it's a big chunk of change to shell out. But in the long run it'll save you some money and you won't run out.
