WOW!  I didn't know there were so many choices out there.  I am looking to purchase my first pellet grill.  My budget is in the $800 range.  What a wealth of info on this sight.  I am leaning towards the GM.  Need to get it fairly soon would like to do the turkey for Thanksgiving and want to practice with it before then.

Sorry I forgot to introduce myself.  I am Mike Stair from Gates Oregon.  It rains 8 months a year here.  I have been the pastor at the Gates Community Church for 21 years.  I love to hunt and fish and can't wait to smoke some bear or elk.  Looking forward to learning how to grill with pellet smoker.

Welcome to SMF Mike. Glad to have you here with us. The GM gets great review and I think you would be happy with it.

Thanks.  I am hoping to go into town today to take a look at one.  How important is the bigger cooking surface 400" vs 600"?  We are a family of 4.

Size really just depends on how much you plan on smoking at one time. If you are just planning on doing single meals for your family with some leftovers then 400" should be fine. I like to cook a lot at one time (saves on fuel) and then freeze and I have meat for weeks. You'll probably have a better idea once you look at them, you can judge the size better and figure how much space you might need. Just remember, if you get addicted to this like we are, you are going to want more space.
