For the 20th Annual local county (manatee) fair's charity BBQ compitition on Jan 24th... This will be about the 10th year,or so, I've participated... As mentioned it's for a local charity "of your choice"... I cook for the local Boys and Girls club... Meaning any winnings go to them in your team's name (Team Rufuze-2-Luze)... For a $50 entry fee, They supply the meat ,bog of Kingsford blue charcoal, starting fluid, and a lighter... Charcoal and wood only, no electric... This years meat choice is Brisket...
It's usually the same 10,12,14 (sometimes) teams with a new team once in a while. We also cook, pass around to all other teams, and vote for your liking of appetizers while the main meat is cooking... They have 3 or 4 unknown judges for the meat... We've won brisket ($500)and gotten two 3rd places ($150 each) in chicken... One win in appetizers.. no payout for apps... Just something to do while meats cooking...

When I first started doing this comp It was a $100 entry fee and they also supplied, along with said stuff above, everybody with a new weber kettle (22") to cook on... This was to make it the same for everybody... After it was over the team got to keep the kettle... Drew a name out of a hat to see who got to keep the kettle.. My teammate got it, so I siad I'll get next years... DIdn't they quit offering the kettle next year... GGRRRRRRR ...

Anyways, I could ramble for awhile but I'll spare y'all...
Aughta be fun...

Good luck and make SMF proud

Yeah, yeah, yeah! Sounds fun.
Rule #7 sounds hard to be a good boy, Keith.
I'll see if my wife wants to brave the traffic to make the trek.

We signed up to sell our products at a festival that weekend but I'm putting it on my calendar for next year. Good luck my friend

So the competition was fun... Plenty of good appetizers being passed around..

I had new teammates this year and it was their first time doing a competition.. They had a good time and said they would like to do it again... Those that went to the S.Fl. Gathering met the team mates.. It was Dirk and Jason...
We were really happy with our brisket.. It was tender.. juicy, and flavorful... It just wasn't in the taste the judges were looking for I guess... .. They only announce the top 3 and we weren't one of them...

BUT ... My grandson, Robby (at the gathering as well) and his partner did get a call... They ended up getting third place... So that was fun to watch them place...

Jason made our appetizers... It was pork shots made of andouille sauage with a slice of dill pickle on top of that... Wrapped with bacon and then filled with a mixture of cream cheese, shredded pepperjack cheese, and green chilies all mixed together and then put in the cup formed from the bacon... OwensBBQ.com's Tatonka Dust was sprinkled on top of all of them... I'm not a big dill pickle fan but they did turn out to be pretty damn good... The dill came in on the back side and then the green chilies come in after that giving it a little spice at the end...

As usual tho like I said... We had a grteat time...
