When my son in law bought this house and spent 2 years doing some renovations he put in a new AC & Furnace. He also had a floor guy install tile in the middle room, dining and kitchen. I told him its going to get cold...Yup I was right.

Anyways

For proofing my bread I have a Brod & Taylor proofer but it only holds 1 bowl, not insulated and I broke the side hinge around the surround.

So
I got a heat mat and used a large black tote. There again not insulated so it took time to heat up

So

A friend sent me an Amazon link for this foldable proofer. It has a top window, zippered, digital control, thermo probe inside, insulated all around, heats from both sides and the bottom, comes with 2 wire racks and a small SS bowl for if you need moisture. The control is able to unhook from the bottom so when you fold it into the carry case.

Great $79 purchase. And im thinking will work for fermenting sausage....EH

The black probe is on the back wall.

I've never been a fan of tile floors. When we re-did our flooring, even though we were putting engineered hardwood in all the other downstairs rooms, I went with commercial grade sheet vinyl in the kitchen. Looks like 12x12" tiles. Its a kitchen, not a candidate for architectural or design awards! It sees a lot of traffic, things dropped on it, etc.. I also didn't want a darker color. I like to see when it needs cleaned!

We burn a wood stove. This time of year is no problem getting a rise, its usually 73-78F in that space during the day. I use a seedling mat to keep my feet warm at my desk!

When I was making pizza weekly I used an insulated tote and a large electric seeding mat, but your proofer looks like it would work much better, and I like the clear window on top.

As far as tile floors go, even in CA I wouldn't put in a tile floor in a living space especially in bathrooms without installing an electric radiant heat mat under the tile, it's not as expensive as you would think. I can't stand cold floors in the winter, as we normally go barefoot in our home, yr round. And nothing worse than getting up in the middle of the night to take a leak than stepping on a cold tile floor. 😬🤬🤣

i put 2" foam under my tile floors. that means in basement under floor not under the tile itself. lol helped a bunch but still cooler than carpet. especially when its 0*.

"installing an electric radiant heat mat under the tile" This is about the only way I know to keep the tile from getting cold

I prefer the H2o rad heat mats that heat with a small water heater or boiler, but they are cost prohibitive for my pay grade.

We have H2O radiant infloor and under floor heat with a mix of tile, hardwood and carpet. Floors are toasty heck even the toilets are warm. After being out all day in the cold and come home take your boots off and cold feet hit warm tile, it’s amazingly comfortable.

Cold inside??? OH SH*T... he must be married
*I hope this is taken as the joke of meant to be..*.

My parents house has it as well, they hardly use their furnace, and their house stays 72* all winter. If we go with tile in the kitchen and bathrooms when we redo them, I'll have the electric mats put down before the flooring goes in for sure.

We have ceramic tiles in 90% of the house (One room to go). I guess it's just cool to have cool floors in So Cal. Most of the time it is more of a blessing than a curse.

They are the easiest to keep clean by far. No heating required. They also last forever with minimal maintenance. Grout fixing is needed every now and then. I kept the original grout from many years ago and it was just used this week to fill in along the new rear sliding glass door we had installed. That is in another thread but keeping a bag has paid off over the years. It matches perfectly.

In the winter just get use to wearing socks in the house. Barefoot is OK but socks are better.

We keep the house at 71* in the winter and 74* in the summer. The tiles are never that far off even with cement slabs.
