I was in the local Kroger today and noticed one of their sale signs. Single cryo-vaccumed bone in pork butts for $2.99 a pound "ON SALE". I thought that can't be right. So I looked over the display at the individual packages and yep, $2.99 a pound. No way!!!!

I did spot 2 that were marked $1.19 a pound and quickly scarffed them up into my cart. I need to make some breakfast sausage next weekend and that will work. I was going to thaw out some I had prepped when they had them for $0.99 a pound back in March. The sell by date was 2 weeks away and was the same sell by as all the more expensive butts, same brand, everything. I think somebody got click happy with the label maker and did not really look at what they were doing. The high around here is normally $1.99 to $2.29 a pound and Sams Club runs $1.69 a pound or less. Generally a good sale is in the $0.69 to $0.99 a pound range around here (usually we see that price twice a year and I stock the freezer - pre-trimmed for grinding into sausage and a couple kept whole for pulled pork)

What made it more insane was about 2 hours prior, I had read the Wall Street Journal story about how there is currently 2.5 Billion pounds of beef, pork and chicken backing up in USA processing and storage facilities since China started taxing the crap out of USA imports. At some point they will have to fire sale all that on the USA and other markets.

I’m certainly waiting for a meat fire sale. Beef is especially outrageous here in So Cal. I would be more than happy to stuff the freezer full with cheap meat. That pork butt I made yesterday was $1.47 a pound. That’s about as cheap as it gets here. I would absolutely love to pay .69 cents a pound for pork butt.

Hmm.. I was in a GFS or Grodon food service store today.. they had 2 packs of bone in or no bone butts.. $1.49 and $1.39 per pound.
They have GFS in Georgia. Not sure how far you live from one of their stores.
I go in that or those places often.

We just picked up one for 1.79 lb. I'm sure the price will go up as we only bought one.

Month ago I bought some butts for $1.16lb.
Cheapest I can find now is Sams by the case. $1.62lb...followed by Wegmans $1.66lb.

I was at a Wegmans today while my better half was at a specialist's appt. Pork butts were $1.39 lb. You need to make educated buys and know the expense of stuff. Generally, however, there are incredible arrangements there: the present rundown included 12 bunches of canned veggies for $5.49 and 2# bundle of provolone cheddar for $5.99. Likewise snatched other stuff as they have an enormous gluten-free segment.

These were a buy a couple of months prior. My little girl continues to request "good steak". Continuously keep your eyes open for the little orange stickers that saw "sell by today" or "decreased for a brisk deal".
