Ah, one of my favorite pieces of equipment. One of the few flying objects in the sky, that the plane was an afterthought! My boss at a job years ago had several fired casings its 30mm Avenger. We made him some to-scale brass bullets in the machine shop. The size of the loaded cartridge is unbelievable. Then, thinking about the fact that it can fire 70 of them a second just blows my mind!
On a practice excercise we had the benifit of 2 a-10s flying support and starfing positions on the ground for us. Incredible planes in flight, and that gun... I would hate to be on the wrong side of that when the pilot squeezes off a burst.
Now to find a picture of an ac-130 while firing...
Yeah, when you would hear them fire all you could think of was "Holy Sh*t!!!"............almost makes me miss the military days..............ALMOST. LOL
I was a senior in high school during the first gulf war. One day in English we heard the weirdest noise out of the window. Two of those bad boys were rounding the curve at a low altitude just east of the building. Awesome, just awesome!
thier engines have a very distinct sound as well. Must be that high pitch of the turbine.
The soviets Hind is the same. You hear it long before you see it and there is no mistaking whats coming. Had one of these do a "simulated" strafing run on me. Very intimidating!
I have a vid somewhere of those black SUV's in the Prez's motorcade... pop up Vulcan type de-foresters. When fired, the windshield wipers automatically come on to clear the windshield of brass...!
