i am in the process of building a smoker in my backyard. i am in the middle of los angeles so all my neighbors are looking at me like i've lost my mind. they can't quite figure out why i would smoke meat at home when i can ust go to the store and buy it. well anyway, i want to get some advice on the doors. from what i have seen, most people use cast iron doors and frames is that correct?

i will need three....

18" wide x 14" tall
24" wide x 14" tall
24" wide x 14" tall

i am calling around to fabricators and metal shops. is there anything i need to be aware of when i talk to them and get closer to purchasing?

Option A.

1st)  Find some doors (online) for wood burning stoves.  You can find some really nice looking doors and they will be TONS!!! cheaper than trying to have some special order doors cast for you.

2nd)  Build your smoker around the doors!

OR Option B.

Have some doors fabricated from steel plate.  (unless you are just set on cast iron doors... in which case See option A.)

Hope that helps!

thanks. i have been looking online for some, but you know how you kinda get an idea in your head of what you want...that's where i am now. i sent some specs to a fabricator today to see what he says. hopefully its not an arm and a leg. if so, i just may be follwing your advice and getting some wood burning stove doors!

i actually found someone to make all three doors and frames for me. i checked out his work and was pretty impressed. he gave me a really good price. think he just wanted to be part of the project. i posted some picks of my start on the adventures in LA thread.
