Have had no luck with any food grade drums here locally.  Went to the scrap yard today and sent my 13 year old to the top of Mt. Saint Barrelens and found this.  Looks to have no liner and can't detect any odor.  It had a few bb sized white somthings in it and has a very faint white dust inside.  I am just beyond ready to get this thing started so if you have input, by all means.  Anyway, here is what we found....................

and finally here is the label.  I have tried researching online to no avail.....

It looks like it was some sort of adsorbent made of aluminum oxide beads.  I'd say just hose it out thoroughly to get rid of the dust, which is likely quite abrasive.

In this case is burnout completely needed? Limited on what I can do here in town.

Nice barrel! I just got one (actually 2) today. They really need a good burnout, and they do not have tops...so I will be cutting the bottom off of one to make a top for the other.

Can't wait to see yours put together.

Here is where we stand now.  Did a burnout at a buddies land.  Almost all paint came off outside and sprayed soot out of inside.  It is clean to the touch inside just still black.  Do I know need to grind this black off or is it ok how it is.  Made the fire basket last night and getting grill grate mounted tonight.  Ready to fire this thing up to test it.  Just not sure about the inside at this point.  Any help is appreciated and more pictures to come.  If this thing turns out like I want its gonna be sweet!!

Think I found my answer. Anyway, next question. My drum is exactly 22" in diameter and to small for weber lid. I've seen mods for when the lid was 2 small but haven't really found what to do in my situation. I just rested it on the drum for a test run last night and had some trouble maintaining constant temp. I will try the flat lid tonight and see if that makes a difference.
