Smoke Blower
Original poster
Ok here goes, I am working on a new home made smoker in my head, kinda scary, but............................................... .......

I have a few questions I want to ask, and see what my smoking friends think.

Which metal should I build it out of, a guy at work seems to think I can come up with enough junk Stainless Steel at work to make my smoker, but I was thinking of going for cast iron, any suggestions?

I am planning to build onto a trailer a small 10 to 12 footer, do I want the heat source at the front (tounge ) of the trailer or at the rear?, also I am thinking of going with propane and a smoke chip/chunk box, I know most competive smokes require wood/coal heat only, maybe I could make a sidebox that the propane element could be removed to use coal/wood only if needed.

I am not building with permanent racking, I am thinking more of the oven type setting with adjustable racks, that are removed when not in use.

I am thinking of a twin door box, that would be about 4 foot tall, and between 30 and 36 inches deep, with my racks being about 30 inches wide, the doors would open from the middle and away from each other, I also plan to have racks tagged, as I have friends who are non pork eatters, and would have racks for just pork, and others for everything else.

does this sound like a big dream, well for me it is, but I am thinking of putting this monster together in the next year, I will post photos and keep everyone updated, but give me any ideas, I need all the help I can get!

Sounds like a nice dream Frank.
If I had a way to get free metal and make anything I wanted I think I go with all stainless. Just a personal thing. It's a good bit lighter weight and easy to clean and doesn't rust as easily outside. Firebox could still be cast bottomed.

Keep us posted!

Sounds good to me!...As I kick this around in my head over the next few days, I may wind up with an idea or 3 that may help...

Already got a couple of thoughts going on here...

Let me study on it a bit...

Frank, for the very low upkeep, I'd go with the free stainless, if it's a heavy enough guage... Not sure what that guage should be though. I'd think the whole firebox should be lined inside with heavy steel. Most of the mobile units I've seen have the firebox at the rear, I'd guess for easy of accessability and to keep ashes and coals from getting all over trailer parts.

Just some thoughts...

Hey Chrish:

Happy early birthday and keep the spirit up cause you just never know.
