Thanks guys I tested it out on both of you....Points to both...The search just does seem to be working right for some reason....Maybe just me

Why bother,

some of us lost hundreds, and even over a thousand of them just 6 months ago with the crash. Got mine back about 3 times, over 900 of them, but as you can see, they are gone again. There are other veterans of the site who lost twice as many as I did and still have 1 green square.

The points system here is more about luck/popularity than actual reputation. It used to be that the folks with the green tiles and high rep points were the Gurus of the site, masters of teaching, and the OTBS knights were even a band of more dedicated pitmasters on top of the high rep point totals. As I look around this site ;ately I see alot less dedication, and more "questionable info" being served up by people with alot less experience than the ones they are arguing against or discounting. Not only is that disrespectfull, but can also be dangerous to folks who are taking these"theories" as gospel. There was a day when that stuff wouldn't fly on this site.

If anyone thinks I am blowing smoke, take a look at the members list and the ones with the highest thread count, or the longest resistration date, and then look at when they last posted. If you take the time you will see where the "experience factor" left the site.Look at who has the points from them veterans and what the totals are now. There have been a couple who have passed on in death, but thats all, the rest moved on or just lurk now.
Growth and change can be good, but forgetting the roots, and core members, and their envestments of time, research and participation is a big mistake IMO, and is a huge reason than many of us past SMF members no longer start threads here, and rarely post on any either.

SCPatterson, this has no reflection on you or your quest for info, so I am not directing it to you in any way, Its more of a general question/statement about the whole point system, and the joke it has turned into!

When you think a person has done something that deserves points leave a short note telling them why you left them some and Who you are. Otherwise they are just meaningless points. Well earned points are in my opinion still as valid as they ever were.

I had a kaboodle of points before the great purge of 2009 , All gone now. Some were left anonymously and were appreciated but some came from the Gurus and Pit Masters of SMF. People who left their name and the reason for the points. Those points meant a lot to me.

If you don't leave your name the person will not know who left the points.

I did notice that some people did not ahve the points that I would have thought they would with the posts that they have made or join date. It just didnt add up but I alos did not know of the purge or crash, whatever it was. I like the theory of knowing who knows what they are talking about because I read alot on here and see a bunch of incorrect info. I do go to another site that seems to be bigger than this one but I dont see the response that I see here. New guys asking questions and not getting any help so I dont read as much there. I like this one better and take everything with a grain of salt.....Enough of that...Did I mention Im cooking my first whole hog tomorrow night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Working the hell out of that new Lang

points are nice to see... i personally dont care whether of not i get them, i get enough satisfaction knowing that i helped someone with their questions..

so thanks everyone who gave me posts and keep firing away the questions..lol

Thanks Steve , you're right. It did not use to give the givers name.
Its been a long time since I had any points to worry about.

Scpatterson , yes that's correct , a lot of us had 1000s of posts and hundreds of points. I went from more than 1200 posts down to somewhere around 360 and the points I had accumulated are all gone.
It was a trying time on SMF back then. On some days you could not even log on. We were off for almost a week one time. Thanks to some really hard work by Jeff and the Admin on here we finally got the site back from purgatory. Slowly but surely the different features we were used to came back one by one. Bmudd ( Brian ) did some awesome work getting us back to a semblance of normal donating many many hours of time helping Jeff and SMF out. For this he was nominated and awarded a very well deserved Special Knighthood in the OTBS.
I know that if you did not go thru this purge you would have no way of knowing that the post counts and point counts are quite often wrong and give a false sense of a persons involvement in SMF.

Its all good with new guys coming on and learning from the Great Gurus and Pit masters to be found on here. New Pit Masters will evolve. Newbs will turn into competent smokers and in their turn will welcome new newbs and the cycle will continue. Smoke on Dude.

Great to see you enjoying the new Lang.

There are alot of BBQ sites on the net, some are better, alot are worse, but smf does a decent job keeping folks from wasting alot of meat, and bringing folks together to enjoy their hobby.

Great explination Gnubee!
