I'm doing a 7½ lb butt this Saturday in my Brinkmann SnP, I'm going to try Royal Oak Lump in the 10lb bag for the first time, I've heard good things about it here. How much do you think I'll need? And how many chimney's worth should I start with (lit and un-lit)?

Also, about how much time on average does everyone else get out of 10lbs of RO Lump?

Thanks, Solar

I've been successfully doing butts with RO with the following:
  • 1 chimney of lit coals to get ya going
  • 1 chimney of raw coals in the pan (check out minion method)
Depending on how often I need to feed the fire, I can get away with using 1/2 a bag. Other times I've used 3/4 to the entire bag. Just depends on the pieces of the hardwood that make up the bag.

I have a well modified firebox and I'm familier with the minion method, I'm just curious about how much RO everyone else goes thru on a typical smoke.

I've used Publix Greenwise lump before, but I think it burned a little to fast, the chunks varied a lot in size, and I went through about 8 lbs in 5 or so hours. I'm hoping that the RO is a little more consistant size wise and burns more even.

BTW, I picked up 4 bags at WM, they were $5.27 a bag.

I have a chargriller Pro w sfb. I use Royal Oak / Best Choice and get about 8 hrs out of a 10 lb bag. I start with a chimney and half to get it going and from there use about 3/4 to a full chimney about every 1.25 hrs or so. I've tried various forms of minions only to find I get high temp spikes - must not be using the right method!

I use about the same as Solar, the last butt i did, 12 hr and about a bag and a half 10lb bags. Here is the method i use and find that i don't have to add fuel for about 3 hrs then just add a chimney half lit every 1 1/2 hr to two hrs alot depends on the outside temp.

Can you explain the coffee can? Do you add un-lit to the can and then pull the can out?

Good read guys/gals,

But I have a problem, my local Walmart(s) are done for the season with royal oak!!! Anyone pull any strings for the few here in Maine who would like just a bag of RO????

Well, I can get as much as you want right now, but I'm sure the shipping cost for a 10lb bag may change your mind.

I start the first chimney and get it about 80% ash, pour into the can and then pull out the can..(use pliers..otherwise it hurts like H@#L)/ Then when I need more fuel I use a full chim...about 1/2 ash. Hope this helps

I feel your pain... Mine is done too. All the grills and smokers are on clearance.
Too bad they didn't have any GOSM widebody smokers on clearance... LOL
There are a couple BBQ stores close, I'm going to check them and their prices out. I can't believe they got rid of all their stuff before Labor Day.
