I am planning on making some pulled pork for a birthday party. We will have about 18 people there. Does anyone know how much meat I will need for that many people? I have never made this before so it should be interesting to see how it turns out!

Also, I am planning on using Jeff's Naked Rib Rub and Famous Barbeque Sauce. Will this work? I am pretty sure it can be used for more than just ribs but I am still pretty new to the whole smoking thing and wanted to make sure.

Thanks!

What else are you serving meat wise? If just pulled pork I find that I usually get around 20 sandwiches on cheap white hamburger buns (CWB) out of an 8 pound shoulder. I would do two shoulders to be safe. (Leftovers are good!)

Hope this helps!

Take care, have fun, and do good!

I just did a cook out for 21 guys.

I did 2 racks of ribs
2 3lbs briskets
around 20 drumsticks
around 40 chicken wings deep fried
and 4 4lbs shoulders

I did some extra so that I could have some for lunch and I had nothing left over

Right now I am just looking at making the sandwiches. I was thinking about adding some ribs as well just for fun but my wife wants to keep things simple. (I'm still trying to talk her into it) I have very limited experience so I want to try as many things as possible. As it is I am thinking pulled pork, Dutch's wicked baked beans, and some ATBs. I have never tried any of them so it should be fun!

If all 18 are adults, I would figure at least 2 sammies for each. A little cole slaw would not be out of place. You might even suggest to your guests to put a spoonfull on the pulled pork sammies.

Hope this helps.

I find that I get about 20 sandwiches from one 8 pound shoulder. The post cooking weight of the pork once you have cooked it, pulled it, removing the bone, fat, and connective tissue will be about half the original wieght. dividing that by 20 you are serving about 1/5 of a pound in each serving. If you figure 1/4 pound then you will get 16 servings from one 8 pound shoulder. Those would be good sized sammies.

Based on your original question I think 2 8 pound shoulders would work. Do 3 if you want leftovers.

Hope this helps.

You are getting top notch advice. Two butts, about 7 pounds each from Sam's or your local food service company and you are good to go. Slaw, beans and a tin or two of corn bread, whew, makes me want to slap my ma..................

I just made lunch for 20 guys at work with 2 butts about 9 lbs each on big ole kaiser rolls. Don't forget the tater salad! Ya gotta have tater salad with pulled pork sammies!

Great! It looks like I will be using two, 7 lb butts. That should actually probably leave some leftovers which would be great. Thanks for your help everyone!

Well the Family get together that was planned for last weekend was moved to the 11th of Aug. I'll be doing pulled pork sammiches for 35 people. I'm going with about 40 pounds of meat cuz word got out that I do a mean pulled pork and some are wanting to take some home with 'em.
I'm doing my tame version of Wicked Baked beans and Ma Dutch said others will be bringing salads and such.

Do you have a recipie posted that you use? There are so many recipies out there it would be nice to have a tried and true.

Sorry, should have clarified. I was hoping for Dutch's pulled pork recipie. What rubs and sauce does he use?

Dutch may reply to this post to answer. If not you could ask him by sending him a private message.

Hope this helps!

I use Jeff's Naked Rib Rub for my pulled pork sammiches. I modify the recipe to reduce the amount of cayanne pepper. I mop with apple juice and I apply SoFlaQuer's Finishing Sauce. I figure that a 9-10 boneless pork butt will genoruslly feed 10 adult males by the time it renders down during the smoke and the waste is removed.

Thanks! I can't wait to try this out. I do believe my GOSM is being delivered today. What a great thing to go home to. I had to stop by Home Depot to look at some drawer hardware and accidently purchased another propane tank instead. :)
