well im fairly new here and i burn wood for heat in the home and in shop. with todays demand and rising costs of fuels i opted out of the ratt race with heating fuels.

when ever i get a tree like apple pear or cherry it all gets cut small and i split into 6x 2" hunks for smoking. i have my own hand built splitter. a big one with a crane. and these are my cutting toys. the big echo i just got new this summer. 18" 45 cc and got a 20"er for it too. $329.00 5 year warrenty and lifetime ignition.

got the smaller echo lightly used from ebay for $70. powerhead only. both have been great and not one lick of trouble. the other. lol. just a stand by.

any of you or how many cut there own wood for heating or cooking?

heres me splitting a medium log.

I've got an outdoor wood boiler. We have a versitle tractor with forks I can drop a tree or pickup whats been blown down and then set it 5' from where I cut split and stack my wood. I just bought a 27 ton splitter used to do it by hand with a split maul and or sledge hammer and wedges. Don't get to much wood for smoking once in a while I get a hard maple and I save some for smoking. I use a sthil 440 magnum with a 20" bar

Big ice storm last winter....still cleaning up 2 different Pecan groves 1 two miles from house..the other friend about 6 miles from house...All ya can cut and carry Free....Oh they get Que...good trade..... to keep a friend be a friend.

ya i went around a couple years back here in town. same deal. ice. and for the elderly folks and anyone really. deal was. if they let me cut the fire wood and haul off i would rake and pile all the brush neatly for the city to haul off. i got several truckloads.

Same here, all my heating comes from wood, has been for 12yrs or more saves alot of money over a winter, and get some good wood for smoking as a bonus.

2 of my saws,Husky 335xpt and 345e

We heat our camp with wood. Had a pin cherry tree needed taking down so I brought a little of that home , and butchered up an old apple tree in our back yard last winter for smoking wood.

Nice job BIG GAME. Like the saws. I have a hunting buddy bring me hickory off his Dad's farm in eastern Kansas. Seems sweeter when ya know where it comes from. I trade a couple limestone posts for the wood. Plus he gets to come pheasant hunting here in gods country. LOL.

I cut my own smoking wood from my brother's farm...about 40 acres of it is timber...I get mostly red oak and cherry there. I've been scavenging apple wherever I can find it.

I haven't burned wood for heat for a couple years now...and I really miss it.....I'm a bit of a fire-bug in that respect....I love wood heat....

Eric cuts some great chunks of red oak, goes real good with beef. He's right about burning wood for heat, it does give off a different kind of warmth, one that doesn't come across the same way when using gas for heat.

hmmm. I could not afford to have any one else do it but my kids..lol..

I cut wood for smoking and for having camp fires while up at camp.

I cut all the wood I can get my hands on. Some for heat, some for smoking. Nothing like the heat from a wood stove or the great smell it puts in your house. I burn oak and hedge for heat. I have 2 Crafsman chainsaws. For splitting I am still catching up, all I have is a splitting maul, some wedges and an axe. I need to buy or make a splitter. Smoking wood I cut all the apple and cherry I can get my hands on. Occassionally I get some pecan but not very often. I cut down a neighbors pear tree that is out back drying out that I will try next spring. Never tried pear so we will see. Too bad we don't have mesquite trees this far north. I rarely use hickory, so when I want it I just run to Wally world and buy a bag when I stock up on R.O.

I've got two pear trees and three oops, make that two, apple trees in my yard that loose a branch every now and again. There are a bunch of maples that can't seem to grow any bigger than about 8" in diameter before they disappear and all that's left is a stump.

Dont have a ton of woods here where I live. More housing developments. I usually look for wood as Im driving. If I find someone with a large pile of wood, I will get some of that. Also just met someone who works for the county who deals with the crews that cut down trees.

I cut most of it myself and my neighbors father has a pretty beefy splitter that makes short work out of almost any wood.

No heating of home required here. I think it dipped into the 30's a couple times last year. Electric bill is only about $70 a month come winter.

+1 on the much warmer feel from the wood heat. When I come home from camp after hunting season our house just allways feels cold .

I may try some of this birch next year for smoking.

i named it the gleamin demon. because of the refelector tape.

i built this from scratch on an old boat trailer. got about $1100.00 in it. new 4"x24" lion cylinder new 6.5 briggs with 2 year warrenty.

all new tires and bearings. all new hoses and such. 7 gallon air bomb tank turned into hydor oil reso.

has a 2"x24" hydro crane with tongs i built. dont know the limit but it will pick up some huge logs up 4" diam so far. and crane can be raised up another 2'.

notice on the fender and by the valve lever the three beer holders? hahaha. and the motor is covered on the right with tub. its raining now.

Nice lookin rig BGC, I especially like the multiple beverage holders!

I do cut my own smokin wood, Oak, maple, cherry, apple and mullbery.

thanks. i had a fella here who burns wood in his shop. he seen me working on it a while back after i put the 8' h beam on it and cylinder. he said looked OK but was over kill and seen things that would vibrate loose. lol. well everything ive bolted on i used lock nuts and or lock tite. and welded most. his splitter is a tiny one. i senced a bit of jelouisy in his voice lol. this had high speed tires. i could take it from coast to coast. and rarely run into a log i cant split.

has a 16 gal per min haladex pump. running now at 2000psi. am gonna crank her up one day lol. just got it finished this spring. everything is rated at 2500 psi. so i could jack it up. giving me about 4-6 tons of force extra.

the valve has a preset relief valve. and i have a seperate onr inline too. ill crank the valve one up and lower the inline one.

That be a nice lookin splitter yall got yerself there!

I cut an process alot a my own smokin wood an some fer the shop heater an recreational fires.

Just got a new Poulan 18 inch saw this year an go saturday ta pick up a home built log splitter I just bought. Needs a bit a work but the thins got a V4 Wisconsin engine runnin a 35 gpm pump! Feller built it outa a old fork lift. Log splitter from He**!

I enjoy workin with the wood an it beats payin big bucks fer them little bags a chips at the store.

I can get lots a maple, fair amounts a apple, some cherry, pear, lillac an workin on some hickory. Inlaws be bringin me back a good size load a mesquite in the spring.

Logs er split, branchs run through the chipper. Splits will be fer the lang-a-like an chips an chunks I use in the GOSM.

Next spring I will be puttin the wood stove in the sittin room, gotta get the chimney built first.
