I cant remember working with a firm from central mo. Have with most of the bigger firms, terracon, shannon wilson, geotechnolgy, tsi, … etc. Always looking for quality companies to do work with. I lived in JC for almost seven years before moving to CO for 22. Been back in MO now for six.
ifitsdeadsmokeit ifitsdeadsmokeit - I used to be "upon high" in Terracon. I managed 4 Missouri offices before I quit my perfectly good job to start this company. Competed with Shannon & Wilson, Geotechnology and hated using TSi because of their exorbitant rates they charged...and that I would have charged the same if roles were reversed!

Structural engineer for 33 years. Mostly designing bridges.
...

I am a geotechnical (foundation) engineer/business owner. 18 months to go until part-time semi-retired.
... but I do a LOT of bridges, walls, buildings, lots of grain structures (bins/elevators) cell towers, etc. etc. If it is connected to the ground, I have probably worked on something similar.

You can't see what I do for a living if I do my job right (foundations are buried).
Part of my 25 years in Engineering was 8 years with a defense contractor.
We had a saying "We build ordinance, Civils build targets". Had that discussion a few years ago with civilsmoker civilsmoker and He posted an overhead view of a roundabout he designed covering an overpass. It was a perfect target.

Exactly, lol 👍. DuPont, BMS, Bayer, Gilead, couple small companies no one has ever heard of…
My brother lived in Somerset years ago, been there many times. Now the closest I get to is after the Outer bridge when heading south.

I’m in a pretty nice area around 10miles or so SW of Rutgers and a little more N of Princeton. Not how I envisioned Jersey before moving here a bit over 3yrd ago.

Joined the Navy after high school after turning down a NROTC scholarship. I couldn't see myself being a "leader" if I didn't have any experience. Pissed my folks off and the NROTC recruiter. I figured going in the military would teach me things that would help me out later in life. Ended up staying for a bit under 26 years and still didn't know what I wanted to do. Got a job as the chief mechanic on a ocean survey vessel in the gulf. Hated working with civilians and after a year I realized I didn't need the job and quit. Ended up working at Cabela's for 3 1/2 years. Best job ever! Spent more in the store than I made there. I was a gun inspector. Basically I bs'ed with the men, flirted with the ladies and teased the kids. Moved up to CO and worked at a couple of the lakes as a boat inspector for three years.

Now a days, if I can take a breath on the 1st of every month and can expel that breath on the first of the next month, money appears in the bank account. We live in a rural part of the mountains, so self dependency is a requirement, especially in winter and winter prep. We'll stay here until either we can no longer do the physical requirement or someone finds our bodies after the spring thaw. That is to say, we both love it here.

We the people have paid into FICA as well as our employers our entire working careers.
I am quoting our Federal politicians that refer to SSI as "entitlement". They need to be reminded to look in the mirror before they use that comment on those that actually paid (pay) into the system.
Yea agreed on is NOT and entitledment.....I started putting in to FICA when I was 8 so I will have forcibly donated 59 years when I "get" to have a very small portion back.....

Ha yes targets.....oh and yes one firm I worked on had an agreement with the AF to design runways, roads, and buildings for them to live fire target..... then to assess the damage and how much effort to repart....then design the repair for them to blow them up again.....

I have worked/work with both Terracon and Shannon and Wilson on many projects. Had one that was a dicey one in Seattle, the same project as the roundabout..... we had a secant pile wall (60 feet down 8 foot dia shafts) with 90 foot tie backs multiple rows and then had a 15 foot MSE on top.....Seattle clays through a slide plane.....had a whole set of condos above the slope (clear and grubber messed up and breached a drainage pipe that saturated the slope of a known slide area......had cracks show up in the road on the other side of the condos....... it was a spendy wall.....the contractor won a large DRB with the owner....change conditions.....
