Bought this at the Dollar store, but never tested it in the oven

Thanks

It sure looks like a regular meat therm that has been around for years. My Mom had one just like it, and so do I.
And yes you can leave it in the meat while it cooks in the oven.

Thanks. I was at the Dollar store to check and no info on the package. Just stick in meat

It's probably safe, but being from the dollar store you never really know.

Take a potato & stick the therm in it right to the center. Set the oven at 350 & put the potato in there & see what happens.

It looks like a 'stick-and-stay' thermometer to me. would give it a go, but double check it's accuracy with an instant read during your first couple of cooks.

They had a smaller about 1" diameter, but temp only. It said not for oven use

Have a question later on in the general discussion forum for a smaller prime rib roast and figured easier to just leave it in rather than keep opening the oven to check

Will try the potato method

Thanks

I wouldn't trust it for a critical cook - there's no way to calibrate it since it doesn't have freezing point or boiling point of water marked. You'd need to compare it with a known good thermometer at several temps that are on its scale. I think a thermometer you can't trust is worse than no thermometer at all.

If there's any plastic, I wouldn't trust it. Test the "glass" by lightly tapping on it with the butter end of a metal butter knife. Plastic will sound like a dull thud. Glass has a "tink" sound.

I have 4 meat therms and one oven therm, not counting my wireless. I do not leave the meat therms in the meat. I use them to test meat during or after a cook, kinda like an instant read. They respond quickly. The meat ones all have plastic "glass." The one oven therm that sits on the shelf has actual glass.

When make jerky, I put one of the meat therms in the oven door to vent steam from the meat and keep track of the oven temp. It doesn't get hot enough to melt.

Checked. No plastic and glass
