Have any of you made Homemade Tortilla Chips? I seen a few recipies on the net calling for oil to heated to 400 degrees and fry the chips up. I was wondering if you guys had done any of this and if so what kind of seasoning did u guys use. Didnt know which forum to put this under so figured General Discussion.

Do them all the time we just put oil in a large pot heat it up and drop one chip in. When the chip raises to the top your oil is ready for frying. We just add salt after and then use either a fresh salsa or homemade pico de gallo. Growing up 60 minutes from Mexico everyone makes their own.

Back in a restaurant I worked in they would simply take the raw tortillas and drop them into the deep fryers which were running at 350, might have been 375, turn them a bit as they cooked so they don't stick together.
You are able to tell when they are done by their crispyness then drain and sprinkle with salt, kosher pulsed into powder in a coffee grinder works great.

ya i make them quite a bit. I just wait until the corn oil bubbles when i drop a chip in. i like them a little softer then to crunchy i then toss them with some salt garlic salt and a squeeze of lime everyone love them

350 - 375 is what i fry at and as a tip........only fill the pot 1/2 way wth grease or you will have a dangerous situation on yer hands.

Good safety advise for all. POINTS TO YOU.

I make them all the time. Like the others said, drop into hot oil. It's hot enough if the chip rises. I've also fried them in a large skillet with about 1/2 inch of oil. Seasoning of choice. I usually use just plain salt or with a little garlic powder.

When I saw homemade I was thinking of making tortilla from masa but.....

For a low cal option you can cut tortillas into wedges and microwave until crisp. A spritz with a little cooking srpay will allow salt to stick. I do this all the time. Get the good corn taste but without the fat. You can do this with flour tortillas as well.

thx but i have seen very unfortunate things happen with hot grease........

Now I have only done them a couple of times. But I would agree with most everyone here saying that they used fresh tortilla's and fry them up with some high heat and then just sdd salt to them while they are still hot.
