it sounds like you are describing drywall fiberglass tape but it also sounds like thermo-insulation tape like the second pic

Thanks Tom, I was actually thinking about getting one for my Brinkmann because of another forum. You just saved me some money. By the way, what is R value. Or is that too complex to even explain. Not saying you don't know, but probably that it will just go over my head if it's too much.
 
you probably shouldn't need insulation on a smoker. i put it on mine because i used a standard 55-gallon drum, which is fairly thin metal, for my food chamber (or oven). i used a side firebox for a char-griller offset for my firebox. i had to build too big a fire, to me- i was using lots of charcoal and wood. now i use probably half of what i was using.
