Hey everyone,

So I am new here and I must say just reading some of these posts makes me hungry lol. My brother-in-law got a smoker for Christmas a few years ago and I am OBSESSED with it lol. The meat is sooooooo much better cooked that way. I unfortunately can not afford something that price with this economy :'( SOOOO I have a question lol. I have noooo problem making something from scratch lol as long as it functions like it should. Could I turn one of these drums into a smoker? Any advise? PLEASE HELP!!!! Has anyone tried?

Thank you in advance :)

Welcome aboard,

Plastic - no unless it's food safe and to be used as a cold smoker
Steel - yes but it would have to be clean without any liners.

If your short on budget you can probably get a used Weber Kettle on the cheap. Just check craigslist or FB market place.

Welcome to SMF from North Texas!
Yes as stated you can convert a drum into a smoker there are tons of recommendations/how too's /directions to do it on here and the rest of the internet. The other option is to buy a Pit Barrel Cooker which is a drum smoker that is ceramic coated and is reasonably priced. The advantage over doing it yourself is the ceramic coating, which beats battling rust. They main package is $400, which is spendy, but much less than a lot of smokers of lower quality.

Welcome from Kentucky!

Ugly Drum smokers are easily made from a steel drum. The easiest drums to work with are the ones with the removable lids. You can do it from a regular drum with the crimped on top and fabricate a lid, but definitely easier with the ones that have a removable top.
