I am brand new to smoking meat and i just got a brinkman propane smoker and the instructions are not clear where i put the water or the wood.  Does the water go closest to the flame or the wood?

Welcome to SMF Robives66, don't be ashamed, it's not a stupid question, while I'm not familiar with your smoker the same principles apply.

The wood has to be close to the flame to ignite, is there some kind of a wood or chip box, the wood should be placed in it.

The water will go in the pan over the wood.

How 'bout stopping by roll call and tell us a little about yourself so that we can welcome you properly.

ya, you should have a heavy pan that is probably cast iron.  That will be for your chips.  It will need to be closest to the flame.  The water pan which is just a light weight pan will be right above it.

Matt is correct, not knowing your smoker, he gave you the best answer. Whcich model you you have? Try going online to Brinkman and maybe you can download the instruction manual, which probably will be in PDF format.

Welcome to the SMF, never hesitate to ask a question, it mean you're willing to learn,

I moved your thread to roll call so that others can give you a warm welcome to the SMF.It's all good my friend.

Robives66  welcome to the SMF.

Looks like you might have found your answer.

If not here is a like to the owners manual for brinkmann propane smoker.http://images.brinkmann.net/docs/pdf/810-5530-S.pdf

On page 23 of the manual it shows the wood pan and the water pan there looks to be no difference in the type of material they are made from.

On page 18 there is some reference to the location of the wood pan and the water pan.

On page 10 it states

To add wood chips while cooking, open the bottom smoker door and place additional

wood chips into wood chip pan. The wood chip pan should sit close to the burner.

Hope this helps

Welcome!! You're going to like it here. :)  It's a real friendly group of folks.

Propane smoker hint: I found wrapping the bottom of my water pan with aluminum foil really helps with cleanup.
