Hi all, new to smoking. Got an older smoker for free (helped a person move and they gave it to me)! Sooo happy! Finally getting ready to figure it out. I've done ribs before on the grill (oven first) but this is my first time learning how to smoke.

I am going to start tomorrow trying to figure out the heat and controlling it, and Monday trying my first smoke with ribs. Wish me luck! And any pointers would be appreciated!

Good luck to ya. Let us know what type of smoker you have and where you live so we can help you out.

Oh ya welcome to the forum

Chris

Thanks for the welcome. I am going to check out my smoker now, and see what I have. I believe it's a custom. So excited!

Thanks smokinlogs! Working my way to 10 posts so I can post pics!

Welcome Sean!!
A few years ago I sold my "Lopi" Woodstove to a guy who lived North of "Thunder Bay".
Mrs Bear thought I was asking too much for it, but the guy paid my price & drove all the way from there to SouthEast Pennsylvania to pick it up & all the way back in a Subaru.
I found that interesting.

Wow, there are so many places he could have been from! Did he happen to say where? We like to take trips to the states on occasion... We were just in Minneapolis for 4 days for the Def Leppard concert!

Ok so here is a pic of my Q, I believe it's a custom build. Tried it out yesterday and couldn't keep the coals going when I closed the cover as there aren't any vents. Any tips?

Hello and Welcome. I have driven past Thunder bay a few time on my way to Wawa. Very beautiful country up that way. Now on to your smoker that does look like a custom homemade one and its surprising that there arent any vents I also noticed that it looks the intake between the two is closed off or does that open up ?

The intake between the burn box is open, the cover just seems to be a waste cover. I was surprised as well that there isn't a airflow control. I can't leave the front of the burn box open as I lose a lot of smoke from there, and once I close it the coals go out.
