Hi everyone,

I'm a complete novice at BBQ but after years of looking longingly at proper BBQ on tv and failing to get anywhere near with gas and charcoal grills, I have just puchased my first offset smoker (Landmann Kentucky Smoker) and I'm ready to try my hand at smoking.

I'm in Guernsey in the Channel Islands (sort of UK but not exactly and with better weather!!)

I would appreciate any help or tips on how to get started, I have already got briquettes and wood chips, a charcoal starter and a Maverick double probe remote thermometer. What I really need now are practical tips on the technical aspects and, most importantly, any good beginner recipes or an idea of what to try first.

Thanks in advance

David

Welcome to the forum.....and congratulations on your new smoker!! BTW....it's better to use wood chunks or splits of wood instead of wood chips.

Hi David, Welcome to our "Family" and "Addiction"

Plenty of good folk on here, ask any questions you can think of, and you will get your answers.

Not familiar with your smoker, but I can almost guarantee that you will lose smoke/heat from the fire box door and the actual pit door.

Before you start, buy some flat stove rope, from a supplier of wood burning stoves, and apply it to both doors.

What to cook first, nothing! Get your smoker running and play with it until you get the temperatures to run stable 105'C - 120'C.

Once you have achieved this then start with something inexpensive, like chicken.

Wood Chunks are also good.
