heat plate questions

I'm building a 20 diameter cc and fire box. CC will be about 40 inches total. What's the opening size between the two need to be. And how far above my heat plate does my cooking rack need to be.

Usually guys put the grates about 3-6 inches above the plate.

After you check out Len's link then you can look at mine.  I built a 20" smoker that is 36" long.  My rack is 4 inches above the plate.
