All of my cards have the same request and I am finding that even restraunts around here and up and down the West Coast where I travel for business every week are finally starting to check

Being in Retail management (though not the food business) as well, I really think that this is probably par for the course. He asked you for your ID for the booze (whether or not he was required by law is up to your state, I don't know, but I don't think it's unreasonable); now, you want to write a check, something that every place is going to want to see ID's for. Should he have taken care of everything at once? Maybe, but I doubt it. The only thing that I can think is that if he waited until the end of the purchase to ring up the booze, and he KNEW that you were writing a check, then he could have just asked for it, and not given it back until he was done. Otherwise, I don't know what else he could have done.

The question I'd be asking is why I'm writing checks still. LOL, not to be a jerk, but debit card, man!! LOL, I don't know, I try to convert my parents to it all the time, too and they refuse, as well. To each their own, but that's part of the inconvenience of checks.

BC, I have that written on my credit cards as well (I won't even go into the story of my AMEX numbers being stolen somehow and the $14K in charges that someone ran up in 24 hours before being questioned about it).

It is absolutely amazing the number of people that look at that written on the back of my card, and then hand the card back to me. It is printed in big black letters "CHECK PHOTO I.D." and they hand my card back to me???

I think they just look to see if it has ANYTHING written back there...Heck I'm not sure that most of them can read anyway.

You would be surprised how many times the clerk looks and actually asks for my photo ID. The only places it does not work is where you have to swipe your own card in the card reader. Even then I occasionally ask the clerk how do they know if this is not a stolen card. Stores as of late are not really concerned with who is paying with a card but with convenience and speed at checkout.

Glad to see there are more like me who write "Photo Id Requested" on their cards. Great idea for all.

Paranoid.......perhaps but better than having your ID stolen!

You do know that there is no Constitutional right to privacy, right? There is no expectation of privacy in a public place.

I do it to, and they check occasionally. If the person is being difficult and I have the time, I'll ask how he knows that's my card, and does he let everyone use credit cards with no proof of ID. Yeah, the wife says I can be a PITA too.

What could we possibly wish to do in public that we would need absolute privacy?

Frankly, I wish there were more public surveillance cameras. We need as much help as there is technically available to us to catch and prosecute all of the lowlifes that choose to prey on the innocent and law abiding!.......................George Orwell was a paranoid nutcase.

Pops Your 1000% correct. Although I never ran a buisness, I have had the oppertunity of closely working with businesses that do. There are a lot of checks and balances that need to be done to protect bothe the store owner and you the customer. Our state law states that ALL people who purchase tobacco and licquor products, must be shown a proof of age REGUARDLESS! I know this sounds stupid, but the state of Pennsylvania actually sends out bait boys to catch business owners. As for shoeing your licence I.D. for writing your check, they use your Licence identification number as a reference for your check I.D. Although I don't write out many checks for Grocery store items, I always keep my wallet and driver licence handy, expecting that I will need to provide my licence # for check reference. I know this is a pain, so thats why I usally use my debit card for payments. As I said before I do not or never did own or operate a store, but I can well understand why this procedure is done. About 99.9% of use are law abiding citizens. But we all pay for that 1/10% of the crooks and terrorists that are out there, and with that we all lose our freedoms.
Please Don't Take It Personally.
