Hello! I have been smoking for about 6 years with a very cheap Char-Griller smoker. Unfortunately, it has completely rusted out and I am getting a new Old Country BBQ Brazos. I was able to do both grilling and smoking with the Char-Griller as it had both a charcoal tray in the main chamber and the offset firebox, but I noticed the Brazos doesn't have the charcoal tray.

Is it possible to put some grates or trays in the Brazos below the main cooking grate in the lower part of the main cooking chamber (not the firebox) and still use it as a grill?

Thanks!

I got an Oklahoma Joe that is half propane and half offset/charcoal grill. My advise is use the offset smoker for the intended use as a smoker and if you want a "grill" buy a Weber Kettle or some knockoff version, I got a knockoff for like $50 once and used the heck out of it.
The reason I found for not grilling with high heat in the main smoker chamber is that when I did that I would flake off and loose the good "seasoning" I had built up from running low and slow. Then I had to go through and scrape/clean it all off as over time I would have the flakes falling off and onto the food.
Edit: forgot to mention that my Oklahoma Joe has the ability to use firebox as a grill too
Just my thoughts I guess

Have grate in firebox of Wrangler. Learning to grill steaks with it- both ways (skillet & direct heat). Having a blast & besides, my old kettle finally fell apart. Don’t plan on getting a replacement.

The Brazos has a firebox with a door on top and a grate for grilling, some call it a cowboy firebox. I have a Pecos and use the firebox mainly for searing, it's not big enough for alot, you can do a couple of steaks or burgers. Like already said I wouldn't use the cook chamber for grilling.

IMHO - If it was me, I would put grates in the firebox. Running high temps in the cooking chamber will ruin the seasoning
This! Running a fire directly in the cook chamber is going to burn off the seasoning and expose the interior of the cook chamber to rust.

Throwing a grate at the top of the firebox to grill on is fine, as long as the limited space accommodates what you need to grill. If that doesn't work, I'd get a kettle for grilling.
