What are you using?
I've always used the wire brush but recently had a friend of a friend get pretty messed up from a loose wire, landed him in the hospital for a few days.
I figure it's time to switch it up since I pretty much grill every night. I've tried the nilon brushes, the plastic scrub pad and the chainmail even the stainless coil and nothing works as good as the brush.

I hesitate to reply... I might jinx myself. I use the wire ones that are triangle shaped and have to date not ingested a loose wire. I bought a new brush a few months ago at sprawl mart thinking it was wire, but nope.... super hard nylon. Does an ok job cold, once things are hot I just hit it with the wire brush for a quick clean up. I grabbed a nice wooden handle weber the the other day at Lowes but haven't used it yet.

As I see it, it’s a two-step habit. I use the old wire bristle number for cleaning while the grill is still hot (ok, when I’m not rushed). I’ll give it a quick hit while the grill is heating, but then right before the food goes down I’ll swab the deck with oiled paper towel or onion in bbq tongs.

I use stainless grill grates on my green egg. I will use onion on hot grates once a year maybe. Before each use I juse use a paint scraper to scrape the grates. It works great. The multiple angled and rounded edges allow me to get on topn, the sides and under the grate. I havent used the wire brushes in years. I've also let my grate soak in a diluted degreeaser solution and with plenty of elbow grease i got them looking brand new
