Not sure how that dealership is setup but "normally" there is recon done before trades, if it was a trade. In some places a salesperson will do a prelim but almost always in my experience there is a service department employee that does a final inspection either before trade or before the product is put back out for resale or both.
Few years ago we were looking for a good used vehicle, I test drove a Jeep Grand Cherokee that looked promising. Took it or a test drive with the salesman and seemed real promising till we got onto interstate and I noticed the shifting was not quite right when getting into traffic. Ran out of town to another exit and came back testing it and told him they probably better check the torque converter or something, I don't remember exactly what the deal was but a few days later he called me and told me I was correct with one of my suggestions. Him as a salesperson doesn't know all these details and was at the mercy of what he is told.
That being said between that incident and a few other things including the latest purchase from that auto dealer that has Dodge/Chrysler/Ram, Jeep, Toyota, Honda, and Subaru, I pretty much refuse to do business with them even if they had the perfect vehicle we were looking for. Worse part is that I am yet to find someone that has anything good to say about the in the Fargo area.
