I was recently given a nice, fairly large good 'ol heavy cast iron skillet that some one had neglected to take care of. It has some rust, no pitting, just surface rust I believe. Can I just use steel wool to get the rust off then re-season it?

If it is surface rust I would use a green scrubby to see if I could knock it off before I wnet with the steel wool. It might save some of the seasoning on it...if there is any.

The Steel wool will take it to bare metal....if that is your goal to start from scratch then go for it...

Dutch had a post with a home done electrolysis method on it if its really bad with the rust.

I have some sitting in black trash bags with oven cleaner on them.  Need to get them out and work on them too.
