Gasket rope (can it get wet?)

In the middle of a Gravity Feed Build and I see some have the gasket to the fire box protected by a flashing/drip edge. But then the gasket on the door of the cabinet is left to see the elements. Does it hurt that fire rope if it gets wet? Just curious if you get caught in bad weather or something

It's usually fiberglass... no problem...
