If they are vacuum packed I'd freeze them in the packaging. If not I would vacuum pack and freeze. If you don't have a packer wrap them in several layers of plastic wrap and then butchers paper. For thawing, thaw them like any other meat in the fridge.

What's the best way to thaw?
IIRC, Frozen Turkeys take 24 hours per 5 lbs of bird to defrost

Given that a butt is a hunk-o-meat, I would allow a little extra time for complete defrost.

I'd allow 3-4 days before you want to smoke one, take it out of the Freezer, and place into the Fridge.

If it was not vacuum-packed, I'd put a tray under it.

A grocery store has pork butts on sale for. 99 a lb. I am picking up some, and was wondering what is the best way to freeze.them? Leave them in the packing and throw them in the deep freeze? What's the best way to thaw?
I had a butcher at the store where I pick mine up say that it is best to just leave them alone and freeze them in the packing they put them in.....it is very tough plastic.

I see Schnucks has butts on sale for $.99 again.
I pick up 13 of them two weeks ago. When they had the sale going.
Just throw them in the freezer as is. They might take 4 or 5 days to
Thaw them out.
