I use lump. so I don't have much ash. Otherwise, yes, you need to remove the ash from time to time. Not familiar with your cooker, so I don't know the firebox set up. Generally, if you can shake the ash to the bottom and then scoop out with ash shovel. One from a fireplace set works good. You need to make sure the coals are getting good airflow. Don't wait till all coals gone, be ready to add some lit ones as needed.
 
 
yeah that makes sense, I just modified my charcoal grate to allow for better cooking since the one that came with my smoker was only for wood.
 
 
Getting rid of as much ash as possible is a good idea.  Will help the air flow as well.  Someone mentioned using a 2 quart milk container with the bottom cut off of it as a scoop.  Good idea.
