I belive points are usually used for burnt ends. can flats be used. picked up a 6lb flat and was thinking about using it for burnt ends for 4th this year. any input appreciated.

I would say yes you can use the flat, but the flat is leaner and burnt ends benefit from the extra fat of the point. I keep tallow and I would add some of that when I put the ends in a pan to finish...
I think they'll turn out similar to chuck burnt ends. They don't really have the internal fat. Maybe if you have a really well marbled flat. They'll still be good but just not as good as point meat.
Agree with all the above. You might get by with adding cubed pork belly in the mix but flats are really to lean. IMO you would be better off cooking the flat like a brisket should be and picking up a fatty chuck roast to cube up for burnt ends.

Yep but if doing a flat only you might have to add a little water and wrap later in the smoke (180F meat Internal Temp or maybe can go a little higher). Just gotta make sure you aren't burning up/drying out the meat since the flat does not have the internal fat. I'd leave all the fat on top that it has though.
