First time UDS Build: Lid Question

I'm building my first UDS and have a pretty good concept of what I want to do from top to bottom, BUT I'm not sure about how to do the lid.  My barrel is sealed on the top and i'm not sure whether to cut it off just under the rim (on the side) or on the top on the inside.

I want to reuse what i cut off as the actual lid. From the pictures i've seen, some buy the weber 22.5" lid for the top or they have have the removeable lid for th top.  Any suggestions?
