As many of you may be doing soon. In a couple weeks I'm going camping, and I want to be able to grill up my food in a dutch oven and cast iron skillet etc. I'm trying to find something I could use to place over a fire pit to cook on. Looking at the campground I'm going to, the pits are approx 36" in diameter.

What are you guys thoughts on buying a grate, building one or another idea altogether?  In my limited experience online shopping so far, I've only found grates that look more like they were made for home fire pits and cost over 100$. Which is just much more than I want to spend.  Building one isn't a bad idea, just not sure on what to make it out of.

Any input will be appreciated. Even if it's a kick in the butt.

Chris, morning.....  several lengths of rebar to set across the fire pit... then put the cookware on it, above the heat....  Do you have an auxiliary stove in the event the fire danger is high and fires can't be built....

Please take a moment and stop into " /Roll Call/   " and introduce yourself and get a proper welcome from our members.... Also, if you would note your location in your profile, it will help in the future when answering questions about smokin'...   elevation, humidity etc....

We're glad you stopped in and joined our group...    Enjoy the long smokey ride....

Dave is totally correct about making sure you can even have a fire before you go. There are a lot of places this time of year that will not allow an open flame. If you are OK in that regards there are a lot of ways to do it. Most times we build up a big bed of cools while we are prepping to cook and then place 2 fairly large logs on either side of the bed far enough apart to hold our CI skilled or oven. This will direct the heat form the coals up between the logs and also give you coals to use for your Dutch oven. If you need more heat, just add a couple of small limbs to the coals and they will cacth on fire. You can also go to Academy, Bass Pro, or even Walmart and get a collapsible grill to use at a reasonable price...  Just stay away from the this metal ones that can be really flimsy. I would hate for your breakfast to end up in the fire! Whatever you decide on, I hope you have a great time!

Link edited by DaveOmak....  Sorry, outside links are not allowed....  "Campfire Grates" would be a good search .....
